ReliaTrust's virus protection relies on a three-pillar network services approach, which consists of organizing principles; defense in-depth, and automated delivery systems. Virus protection is based on rigorous engineering approach that carefully implements changes to the network to ensure successful virus protection. The two principal elements are defense in-depth and automated delivery systems.
Defense-in-Depth - If one element fails, then the other two elements will provide protection, thus ensuring that networks have multiple methods of protection. The principal elements of defense-in-depth include the following:
- Hardening - Fortifies network servers and workstations to withstand compromises or attacks. Hardening relies on the regular distribution of patches to workstations and servers, and constant monitoring to make pre-emptive identification of vulnerabilities and subsequent corrective action.
- Detection - Maintains vigilance over workstations, servers, and systems against compromise and attack. Detection involves maintaining security patches, updating definition files, performing scans, and maintaining current virus software.
- Prevention - denies
network admittance to threats, viruses, and
attacks. Firewalls provide prevention, serving
as a front-line security barrier to block
unauthorized access and prevent prohibited files
from entering the network.
Automated Delivery Systems - these elements provide the response in the event of compromise or attack. Software utilities scan the network for machines missing critical patches, and patch them automatically, where possible. Scripts and software such as Tivoli, or Microsoft System Management Server (SMS) and Software Update Server (SUS), provide further automatic patching to systems and push patches through to systems. Automated delivery systems aren't essential to successful virus defense - it is possible to deploy all of these patches and changes manually. The automated systems ensure that ReliaTrust can deploy these changes quickly and efficiently.
